Louis started the topic Where To Begin – The Engine in the forum Renovating Morwenna 3 years ago
So work has officially began, you know it is official because I’m waking up at 5am unable to get back to sleep with engineers brain. I don’t do cad designs, I don’t really do much planning ether, just a rough idea that circulates my brain for a few weeks untill the problems are solved.
I’ve started with the engine, the heart of the boat,…[Read more]

Louis started the topic About This Project in the forum Renovating Morwenna 3 years ago
I’ve finally accepted the fact that I don’t currently have the time to write lengthy articles or blog posts. I’ve decided with this project I can create a way to upload images and short descriptions of what exactly goes into the renovation of a boat.
I guess we can call it a diary. To begin with, this is Morwenna, she is a 36ft Atlantic…[Read more]

Hey Paul,
My first thought , what’s caused the corrosion in the first place, do the anodes need replacing and are there earthing issues with the leg.
I’m trying to visualise the issue, the swaging makes it a little more difficult. I’m not entirely, sure how any tube simply put through and hole will have a good seal. For a gasket to work…[Read more]

Hi there
I am looking to purchase a 77″ tug boat which needs full restoration (no engine) into a ‘houseboat’. The boat is moored in Kent so I believe too far from yourselves and services but I was hoping to have a chat to get some more understanding on the renovation required and how much it is likely to cost.
Thanks in advance!

Louis commented on the post, Simploo Compost Toilet- A Full Review 3 years, 3 months ago
I would actually say the Simploo can be quite problematic when it comes to the urine separation. Especially when guests use the toilet, the wee tends to go into the solids container then this taints the solids. It’s fine once you know how to use the toilet and are well practised. For this reason, I would say your wife is correct.

That’s a good question If you’ve still not found your sealant. I could run some tests on your behalf, how long have you got until you need to complete the work? The datasheets should list all suitable materials but granted in most cases, it’s going to just state “metal”.
If you’ve not found a solution, I’ll have a play, I have some 316 In my…[Read more] -

Hey Peter,
Sorry for the delayed response.
I’m trying to visualise what it is you’re trying to achieve, I agree that a few photos could definitely help, send them over to [email protected].You have mentioned screw tab fasteners and silicone, which suggests to me that you are not relying on the mechanical adhesion that those two 3m…[Read more]

Hey John,
I don’t think I’m fully understanding what it is you need to repair. Surely where the rudder exits the hull there is some kind of shaft and gland?
Would this not normally packed with saltwater grease? Can you email me over some photos?

Looks like a great addition to the engine gauges. There is nothing nicer than identifying an overheating problem early before the engine high cooling water temperature alarm sounds an alert. Seawater cooling system failures are a common problem, and changing an impeller or unclogging the strainer is never a fun job at sea when the engine is super hot.

Louis commented on the post, Grunt Boat Cleaner – A FULL REVIEW 3 years, 9 months ago
A lot of the caravans that iv’e come across seem to use a simlliar gelcoat/ topcoat to the the one found on on most GRP boats. On my Seamaster 950 which is polyester GRP it didn’t cause any damage and did a good job of protecting the area for what seemed like a good year after. The non slip area was very well cleaned without removing any paint.…[Read more]

Louis replied to the topic Materials For A Changing Displacement Boat in the forum Boat Building 4 years, 1 month ago
Hello J,
It’s a hard one to visualise. I can offer some breadcrumbs.
To me, my first thought would be to continue with the inflatable material on the outside, PVC or even better Hypalon, chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSPE) synthetic rubber. They’re impressively solid materials when you bring air pressure into the mixture and they offer…[Read more]

Hey Marc, for the non-sailors out there, can you explain what is you’re doing with the legs? Love the idea. My motor cruiser is the semi-displacement single keel, so the thought of grounding out in the channel terrifies me, obviously I have no intention in letting it happen! Not having bilge keels, is a definite con. Are the legs to be used on…[Read more]
