Hi Alex thanks for your question – if we are talking about a table top that has recently been oiled I would personally lightly sand the area that you want to adhere with some 220 grit. Most adeshive sealants will struggle to stick to an oiled surface. Contradictory to this I recently used an old oak table that had been waxed for a worktop. I had…[Read more]

Thanks for the comment Sam, some really interesting points to consider. Due to a lack of good affordable sources for marine plywoood i’m now using composite sheeting that I laminate myself with really good results.

Hello Tamlame, thanks for getting in touch. Bod is your man to talk to about the extension, I’m pretty sure it was built with plywood and then laminated with fibreglass, epoxy and a topcoat, but he will go into more detail with you I’m sure. I know he’s sailing to Newport today and bad weather(he loves it) so hell most likely be back on…[Read more]

Louis replied to the topic Stripping A 11 Meter Mast in the forum Renovation And Restoration 7 years, 1 month ago
Hey Michael, the first idea that came to mind was using Owatrol Marine Strip, but I seem to remember something in the technical data about it not stripping polyurethane paints, so I’m guessing it might be the same for marine varnishes that are often made from polyurethane. Strippers can work wonders, but they’re messy and you need the right type.…[Read more]

I am renovating a traditional 10 metre glass fibre sailing yacht that was built in Berlin circa 1970 on which the timber spars are hollow rectangular section.
I am having a real problem to remove the multiple layers of varnish from the 11 metre mast. Can you advise me as to the quickest way to achieve this laborious task?
The Boom took me about a…[Read more] -

Hello buddy, do you have a photo, a multi tool is going to take quite a long time. You could possibly use a plungesaw and set to the exact thickness of the plywood. I use a Titan mini plunge saw which I picked up from screwfix. Its the tool I use the most, worth the money.

Hi William, there are a few places that you might be able to find information on or someone who may know. The forum on YBW has thousands of boats, sailors and live aboard and is this most popular one in the UK, http://www.ybw.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?13-Practical-Boat-Owner-s-Reader-to-Reader
If that fails you could then try some facebook…[Read more]

Hi John , I have heard really good things about Arbomast br which is a butyl sealant, it doesn’t have any adhesive properties but by the sounds of it and the feedback I have heard from others it will seal fittings and windows etc for decades without problems. And if you do ever need to re-apply it’s easy to remove and start again.
